The 21st Massachusetts Women’s Open crowned a new champion yesterday at the Bellevue Golf Club, Melrose, Mass. when Ellie Dutch (A) of Moodus Ct. defeated 13-year -old phenom, Megan Khang (A), Rockland, Mass. on the third hole of sudden death.
The Massachusetts Women’s Open returned to Bellevue, its birthplace in 1990, after a 16 year hiatus.
Dutch posted a sizzling 68 on Tuesday, lowest round of the tournament, and then waited and watched as Khang, playing in the last group of the day sank a 25-foot par putt on the 18th hole to send the Championship into its first sudden death playoff.
The 13-year-old Khang, youngest player to play this event, backed up her opening round 73 with a one under 70 on Tuesday.
The sudden death playoff started on the 18th hole with both players making par and moving on to the 1st hole where Dutch got up and down from 50 yds out to stay alive and move on to the par 3 8th hole. The 8th hole playing at 190 yds and into the wind proved to be the final and deciding challenge.
Khang playing first hit her tee shot into the green side bunker on the right. Dutch followed with a hybrid tee shot to front portion of the green leaving her a 40-foot slightly uphill putt. Khang failed to save par from the bunker and Dutch was able to two putt for the win and the Championship.
